윌로우 Willow
윌로우는 다국어 글자가족으로, 로마자와 그리스 문자, 그리고 한글을 지원합니다. 이것은 2016-17년 레딩대학교 타입디자인 MA과정에서 진행한 프로젝트입니다. 윌로우를 만들면서 가장 큰 관심을 두었던 것은 ‘서로 다른 언어를 위한 이질적인 문자들을 어떻게 하나의 글자가족으로써 조화롭게 할 것인가’ ‘조화를 이룬다는 것은 과연 무엇인가’였습니다. 윌로우는 한글목판인쇄물의 글자에서 영감을 받았고 그 특징을 로마자와 그리스문자에 적용해서, 손으로 쓴 글씨의 유연함과 칼로 새긴 글씨의 날카로움이 공존하는 것이 전체적인 분위기입니다. 문자간의 형태적 요소를 일치시키기 보다는 형태와 획을 다루는 태도를 갖게 함으로써, 서로 유사한 시각적 목소리를 갖고 있으면서도 각 문자의 특징을 잃지 않도록 하였습니다.
Willow is a type family for multi-lingual typesetting in Latin, Korean, and Greek; and was a project during MA Typeface Design course at the University of Reading, UK. It is inspired by Korean traditional woodblock printing and translated into modern characteristics. Willow has the elegance and organic shape of the brush movement as well as the sharpness of the wood carving. Willow consists of three weights in roman and italic styles: regular, semibold, and bold. It is also available in two display styles for rich text expressions: black(high-contrast), black-sans(low-contrast). Latin, Korean, and Greek have a similar solid and formal voice, but not compromised their own tones.
